English Afternoon Christmas Around the English-speaking World

A festive spirit filled Ernst Beyer Primary School during this year’s English Afternoon, which focused entirely on Christmas.

The children spent an exciting and activity-filled afternoon learning how the holiday is celebrated in different parts of the world, with a special focus on Australia.

To begin, the pupils discovered what Christmas looks like “Down Under.” They learned that in Australia, Christmas takes place in summer, so many families celebrate outdoors, at the beach, or with a barbecue. The children listened to the story Father Christmas in Australia, which helped them understand the traditions, weather, and festive spirit unique to the Australian Christmas season.

Afterward, the classes turned to creative hands-on activities. The pupils made their own Christmas crackers, decorating them with bright colours and patterns. They also crafted festive ornaments to take them home. These activities allowed the children to use English while working together in a fun and relaxed environment.

The next station focused on writing. The children designed and wrote Christmas postcards in English, practising useful seasonal vocabulary and expressions. Many proudly shared their messages and enjoyed imagining who might receive their cards.

To bring some playfulness into the afternoon, the pupils joined a lively round of Christmas Bingo. This game helped reinforce English words connected to the holiday while keeping everyone engaged and excited.

For a final challenge, the children took part in a “workout for the brain.” They solved Christmas-themed crossword puzzles, strengthening their reading and vocabulary skills in English.

Overall, the English Afternoon was a great success. The children learned about Christmas traditions in Australia, practised their English in meaningful ways, and enjoyed a variety of creative and playful activities. It was a wonderful way to get into the holiday spirit while learning a new language.
